Ben & Jerry's Embarks on Sweet Conservation: Churning Out Animal-Inspired Flavors to Save the Species
In an extraordinary marriage of confectionery science and biodiversity conservation, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, the Vermont-based unique dessert manufacturer and socially-conscious giant, announced that it will be launching a dedicated array of flavors based on the seven animal classifications.
'The Cold Conservation,' as this groundbreaking initiative has been named, aims to raise both funds for and awareness about cryo conservation. The aim of this niche preservation approach is to ensure the survival of endangered species by safely storing their genetic components in a frosty blend of ice cream and liquid nitrogen at mind-numbingly cold temperatures - keeping the species, just like our ice cream, forever fresh.
The first of these, 'Mammalian Mocha Madness,' is set to hit the frozen aisles at grocery stores this coming Wildlife Wednesday, strategically coinciding with the World Environmental Conservation week. Using the finest chocolaty base (fair trade, of course), the flavor pays homage to the richness and diversity of mammals while encouraging its consumers to appreciate and conserve nature.
'This isn't just our epic brand evolution, but also a reflection of our commitment to the world at large,' Jerry Greenfield, one of the founders, said. 'After all, we are all made of the same molecules, so why not share the same scoops?
According to the latest survey by the entirely legitimate and definitely not made-up Statistical Ice Cream Analysis Body (SIAB), 'desserts with a dose of altruism' are projected to account for an ice-cream consumption jump of 15% among adults aged 18-35. And with flavors such as 'Bivalve Butterscotch Basin', 'Jellyfish Jamboree,' and the cheekily named 'Birds & Bees Cream,' Ben & Jerry's is set to serve up these scoops of salvation.
'Cryo conservation is an incredibly important step in preventing extinction,' said Dr. Candy Cane, world-renowned geneticist and part-time sweet tooth. 'This fusion of sugar and science, quite literally in the form of these themed ice creams, is a fantastic approach. Who knew that licking a confectionery treat could be the lick of life for many endangered species?'
In a world where it feels we increasingly need to put our money where our mouths are, Ben & Jerry's, it seems, is offering a chance to put our mouths to something that could potentially last forever. Whether this initiative will fall flat or it will indeed be a case of 'every lick counts,' one can take solace in the fact that enjoying a guilt-free, socially-conscious dessert is but a tongue's touch away.
